Tips for Budget Family Travel

A family vacation can be lots of fun, but if not planned careful can also be a big expensive.

Here are a few tips that will help you save money on your next family vacation:

  • Plan in advance – I have already discussed the importance of planning in advance when traveling with kids, but this is also true if you are looking to find special offers and promotion.
  • Choose the low season - A vacation in a non-peak period can be a lot less expensive than during peak periods. This is not always possible with kids at school but can be easily done with smaller kids.
  • Go camping - kids love camping and it is the cheapest vacation available.

  • Choose something close to your home – this will save you the flight expenses.
  • Cook your own means – rent a house with kitchen, go to the nearest supermarket and cook your own meals.
  • Take your friends along – this will allow you to rent a big van together, sharing the accommodation costs, and allow the kids to have much more fun.

The best travel tool ever invented

When traveling with kids, there is one "must have" tool - the portable DVD player.

It is great tools to keep the kid occupied and entertained, and ensure the adults get some quite time. I strongly advise using the DVD player on long car drives and on planes, but I’m also known people that have used it in restaurants or whenever waiting in line.

I would go with this one

It has an excellent quality for an excellent price.

See you out there …

Plan a head

If I need to find the single most important advice I can give parents traveling with kids for the first few time I’ll go with – PLAN A HEAD.

When we were young, we could easily jump into the car and start driving toward our vacation and finding the hotel when we go to the destination. This does not work when you have kids.

As you are bothered with taking care of the kids and other issue, you should do all the possible preparation at home. This include: Flights, Hotel reservation, Car reservation, and a general travel plan. The travel plan should not be detailed as it is probably go to change as the trip progress.

On the other hand, make sure to keep your plan flexible and do not over-plan. You usually do need to plan the restaurants and meal times as it will depend on the mood and activities done during the trip.

Before I will go into sharing tips on what to take to a vacation and how to pack it, let me start with the very basic – The First Aid Kit. The first aid kit includes the most basic items that should be with you whenever you travel.

Here is the content of the First Aid Kit we use:

  • Thermometer –any simple digital thermometer will be good
  • Baby acetaminophen or ibuprofen - For lowering fever and easing pain. Ibuprofen is not recommended for babies under 6 months.
  • Hand sanitizer – use before eating whenever you can not wash your hands
  • Sterile bandages - keep scratches clean and stop bleeding. I strongly recommend the ones with the cartoons figure on them as it entertain the kid.
  • Sunscreen - Use the one with both UVA and UVB protection.
  • Calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream - To soothe insect bites, rashes, and sunburn.
  • Your Prescription medications (if relevant) - bring a copy of the prescriptions and your doctor's phone number, just in case
